MEDIA RELEASE
2010 ‘OLELO BROADCAST SCHEDULE ANNOUNCED
Representative Lyla Berg Hosts Voices For Change
Representative Berg said, “The goal of Voices For Change is to give voice to community members from every island who are concerned about the preservation and protection of Hawaii’s sacred, cultural, and historic sites.” Dr. Berg’s first guest is Kaleo Paik, the Cultural Specialist for Hawea Heiau in Hawaii Kai who discusses the continuing difficulties at the State Historic Preservation Division of the DLNR .
Berg noted, “Our historic and sacred sites are important to all of our communities statewide because they inform us about our islands’ cultural history, offer insights and a different perspective to addressing contemporary issues, and are tied to our economic well-being. What we learn from these sites can help to shape and guide the kind of community we become in the future. MORE.Page 1 of 2
Many of these cultural and historic sites are being threatened by proposed development and communities on every island are raising their voices to call for proper protection and care for these sacred sites.”
Future Voices For Change guests include: Chuck Flaherty – Kona resident speaking about the Kona Field System which is over 1,000 years old and has been partially destroyed; Tamar deFries - Papakolea resident speaking against the proposal to create National Heritage Area for two O'ahu ahupua'a; Ka'iulani Huff - Kaua'i resident discussing the Nau'e Cultural Site on Kaua'i and the desecration which has taken place there; Shad Kane - O'ahu resident speaking about the importance of preservation and the Hawai`i Burial Council, particularly in light of the Oahu Mayor's focus on building a rail system through central Oahu; Kehaulani Silva - O'ahu archeologist speaking about Mokuea Island and the need to preserve it - with Auntie Joni Bagood, resident of Mokauea Island. Malia Evans - O'ahu resident speaking about the dog park proposed over a heiau in Haleiwa, and, Chris Cramer - Oahu resident who is actively working to restore the fishponds in East Oahu as learning centers and sources of food.
Dr. Berg also hosts "211," sponsored by Aloha United Way which airs weekly on Oceanic Cable Channel OC-16. 211 addresses solutions to a diversity of issues and guests openly discuss such real, sometimes-uncomfortable topics as domestic violence, sexual abuse, teen pregnancy, the prison experience, and gangs. The program works to link service resources with those in need, as well as to create public awareness and engender community support. Berg also moderates Voices & Wings promoting children’s civic education, and Focus on the Family featuring interviews with individuals and organizations who address the many vital needs of Hawaii’s keiki.
